There was a lot of growth for me and for Western Rose Studios in 2018 and even more new things that will happen in 2019.
Usually I write this blog post right at the end of December/beginning of January, but this year things are moving a little more slowly. But first, I'm going to reflect on 2018. I decided to focus on a couple new adventures in Western Rose Studios, such as teaching watercolor classes, photographing less landscapes and more people and pets, and networking with other small businesses. I was also blessed with being the winner of the 2019 St. Paul Rodeo poster contest, creating special custom watercolors that were Christmas presents for others, and attending a couple new events.

Yes, I was one of those horse crazy girls that you might have heard of. I collected Breyer Horses instead of Barbies. I looked out the window on road trips and imagined myself galloping on a horse, jumping over fences, keeping my steed along side the car.
And one summer when I was eight years old after day camp, my mom took me to a miniature donkey farm to meet a pony named Star. He came home with us and I renamed him Stardust, since he was dusty in color and his star was tiny. My husband's family has a tradition which takes place in Washington at the base of Mount Adams. It is picking huckleberries. Every season they converge on the Sawtooth Berry Fields. The past couple years the little berries haven't had the best growing conditions, so the picking has been slim. But this year, the bushes were packed with flavorful, purple berries.
Yesterday was Monday, but it was my Saturday. Which meant that it was a perfect day for an adventure! John was wanting to go fishing and I wanted to a new-to-us place. That's when I mentioned Opal Creek and showed him a photo of someone fishing there. Now, keep in mind that we both had backpacks and were prepared for what we were heading into, especially with our late start for the 8.5 mile hike ... but first an iPhone pic of the real heroes of our day, Kona and Coal. These two were real troopers. This was our first long hike as a family and the only complaining they did was when the three of us left John on the river to do a little scouting.
Today we took a little detour home from The Dalles. But first, why were we in The Dalles? Two words: Mother's Day. My mom wanted all of her kids to come to one place (even if we weren't all there at the same time). So we had a mini stay at the R & R Guest House for a night and if you're looking for a house to rent or a B&B in The Dalles, this is the place. Back to the Deschutes River... John was dying to fish and we went to a new to us section of the river that was kinda on the way home (where we went).
Sometimes you just need to get out of town, literally. Today John, Kona, Coal, and I headed out to (John's) favorite fishing spot along the Breitenbush River. It was a cold day and the sun wasn't yet high in the sky. Needless to day it was a warm hat day, so John's Christmas hat had its maiden voyage (doesn't it look all fuzzy and warm?). It was the first time John had fished the Breitenbush with the winter flow and he was just interested in finding out if the rainbow trout wintered in the summer fishing holes. At times our labs splashed in the water next to John as he casted out his line, but he didn't mind as much as usual because the fish weren't biting.
