This August I created a watercolor from this photo I took last year of a new little Drum Horse filly. This little girl is Freyja Maria and her mamma, Derby, out at HyTyme Drum Horses Enterprises. This photo may all be white and brown with a hint of pink, but when you're painting, you can always add more color. Here is the finished watercolor "Twilight Hour." You will notice that I added more color. My goal was to create a magical moment between mother and daughter. You see, you can add all kinds of colors for black, like purple, blue, red, green, and more. I chose to go with my classic dark brown and add in hints of purple since I wanted to highlight with soft yellow, because they are complimentary colors. But how did I achieve the light colored whiskers and eyelashes? I used my old friend, masking fluid. I believe in working smarter and not harder so I'm not shy with tools if it means they will help me with creating the painting I envision. If you love this painting, please leave a reply below and tell me why.
