30 in 30

Tomorrow will be the start of my 30 Paintings in 30 Days project. But what does that mean? Well, my goal is to start and finish a painting in the same day, one painting a day or two paintings in one day if I know I'll be too busy on a particular day. Which means by March 2 I'll have created 30 paintings.

The last time I did something like this was in March 2014. I had certain parameters: one painting a day from photos followers/fans submitted on social media and the watercolor paintings were only 4 inches square.

This time I would like to continue with using images submitted by followers/fans on social media. I want to use this project to help hone in my "sketchy style" and not have to be constrained by only 4 inches square, so I can choose whatever size I think the painting should be.

If you are reading this and it's within the 30 days time frame and want to submit an image, the rules and information on how to do that is right here. And if you want to follow along with my journey, then you can sign up for updates every 5 days right here.

Maybe next I'll do a 30 in 30 with photography. ;-)

Flower Mare

This month I started a second watercolor, a little one, only 5" x 7" and she's a cutie.

The model is one of the many rescue horses that I've gotten to know over at HyTyme Equine Rescue in Eagle Creek. This old girl is Katie Mae. She's one of the oldest horses there, especially since she was the first rescue. She is the sweetest girl as most Percherons are.

If you have a hankering for this watercolor to come home to you (I think she would be perfect for a little girl's room), then please send me a message!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy her.

When to Upgrade your Camera

So you’re loving your DSLR, be it Canon, Nikon, Sony, or whatever makes your heart flutter and inner camera geek emerge. You’ve been snapping away when you’re out with family, friends, and pets and feel like you’re stuck in a rut. Maybe you think the only way to improve your photography is to upgrade your camera. A more expensive camera with more a greater dynamic range or graduating from crop sensor to full frame. But before you do that, try a couple different things first.

My FIrst Prime Lens

I had been using my kit lens (18-135mm) for nearly four months before getting my first prime lens. I remember researching all kinds of lens and following a lot of photographers and finding their blogs. Especially hunting down the posts of “what’s in my camera bag” to better understand how they create the images that I wanted to one day create.

The main photographer I was idolizing lived in New Mexico as a ranch wife telling love stories through her imagery. I knew I wanted my second lens to be a prime lens and she kept posting images taken with her Canon 85mm 1.8 and I really liked the look and feel.

Backlit Beauties

Backlit photos are special and magical, but how do you create them? Well, I would like to share with you how I create backlit images.

First off is positioning your subject, be it a person, animal, or object, with their back to the sun and their face in full shadow. Ideally you want your subject between you and your light source, usually the sun. If you can see the sun in your lens, there is a high chance that you will have a sun flare or two in your image and sometimes those fall on your model’s face. Sun flares can make it more artsy, but it’s good to know how to avoid sun flares and how to achieve them on purpose.

Mastering the Exposure Triangle

When I first started shooting with my Canon Rebel T3i in the summer of 2014, I made the decision to only shoot in manual mode. Sure, I could have taken the route of using all the programmed modes: portrait, landscape, macro; or I could have just used aperture priority, ISO priority, or shutter priority to have a little more control. Instead I went cold turkey and took a lot of under and over exposed and some blurry images as I was perfecting my exposure triangle. Fast forward to now and I’ve improved immensely, but there’s always exceptions to the rules, nearly always something to learn.

What is the exposure triangle?
